FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT (Year B)

We begin a new Christian Year today, and Jesus calls us to ‘be on your guard, stay awake’.  The Advent season is a time for preparation and renewal.  Let us strive to observe it as such, maintaining a truly Christian orientation (as act of witness) amidst all the cultural distraction.

LITURGICAL CALENDAR for 2011/12 is available in church today, prepared by Fr Chris.
THE SOCIETY OF ST WILFRID & ST HILDA (‘The Society’) is to be inaugurated in the dioceses of Blackburn and Carlisle with a Sung Mass in Preston Minster at 7.30pm on Thursday this week, with the bishops of Blackburn and Burnley.  If you’re coming, please meet on our car park here promptly at 6.20pm, and then we can sort out what cars we need.
*CHANGE OF MASS TIME Thursday’s Mass this week is at 9.15am, because of the SSWSH Mass in Preston.  Back to normal next week.  Sorry for any inconvenience.
CHRISTMAS FAIR Saturday 10th December, 11 – 2.  Raffle tickets are available today for you to sell.  Please do your best with this.
NEW ALTAR MISSAL We have had to purchase, for the first time in 30 years, a new altar book containing the Eucharistic texts, because the texts have been revised.  The cost of this book is £235.  It’s a beautiful leather-bound volume.  If you would like to make a one-off contribution to help defray the cost, please use a GIFT AID envelope and let Fr Stephen have it.  Thank you for the donations received so far.
BRITTEN’S A Ceremony of Carols is to be sung here by the Royal School of Church Music (Lancashire Area) Choir here on Sunday 11th December at 6.30pm.  Tickets are now available, from Elizabeth Battersby-Hill.  Please note the date and resolve to come.  The choir is donating all proceeds to us, so we really must give this event our fullest support.

‘WHAT’S THAT CALLED?’ Following on from Fr Chris’ letter in the Magazine, copies of this short introduction to the vestments, vessels and furnishings of the church are available today, priced at 20p.
CHURCH FLOWERS If you have agreed to help with this, there is a letter for you at the back of church today.  A meeting and demonstration has been planned for Monday 10th October (after the 7pm Mass) – this will include a practical demonstration and basic tips from two experienced arrangers from Warton.  Light supper and wine to follow.  All welcome – please contact Fr Chris to book a place.
WALSINGHAM CELL next meets at St Barnabas, Morecambe, for Mass at 7pm on Wednesday 19th October, followed by a meeting.  All welcome.

CHRISTMAS CRAFTS Following the success of last year’s project and stall, Karen Coe, Lesley Simon and Fr Chris are planning another day making crafts to sell at church and around the town.  The craft day is Monday 7th November from 10.00am.  Please sign the list if you would like to come along, and see any of the above for more information.

MISSION STATEMENT There is a meeting in church at 7.00pm this evening for those who offered to help us to get started on the reconsideration of the parish mission statement.

*PLEASE PRAY FOR   Fr David Morgan, of Adlington, who celebrates 40 years as a priest on Tuesday.  The 12 noon Mass here is to be offered for God’s blessing upon him.

CONGRATULATIONS to our director of music, Ann Bond, who has a big birthday this week!

WALSINGHAM PILGRIMAGE Those of us who have recently returned from Walsingham would commend to everyone the benefits of the pilgrimage.  Please consider the possibility.  We intend to go next year, and more details will be given as soon as possible.  It’d be good to take at least one or two people each year who haven’t been before, or who haven’t been for a long time.
