HOLY WEEK
2010
at Christ Church Carnforth

Holy Week is a journey on which we are companions of Christ.
It is the heart and centre of the Christian Year.  In Holy Week
we deepen our beliefs by publicly and together re-enacting and
re-stating them.  As we do so, we join with Christians the world
over and down the centuries.  The events of Holy Week are a unity;
there is no Easter without Good Friday, and Good Friday is
robbed of its real meaning without Easter.  Decide, then, to be a
companion of Jesus; make the journey of the world’s salvation with him.

PLEASE TAKE WITH YOU TODAY a Preparing for Easter leaflet (if you didn’t last Sunday)
and a Holy Week 2010 leaflet.

STATIONS OF THE CROSS tomorrow at 7.30pm.  Why such a lack of interest in this
tried-and-tested Lenten devotion this year, a devotion in which millions of
Christians the world over participate in?

FORWARD! Plus, the quarterly paper of Forward in Faith, is available in church.
Please take a free copy.

SCOUT GROUP COFFEE EVENING Tuesday this week, 6-8pm in school.  Raffle, tombola, cakes etc.

MAUNDY THURSDAY WATCH  There is a list at the back of church, arranged in half-hour slots,
so that we can cover the traditional Garden of Gethsemane Watch, from the end of the Mass
of the Lord’s Supper until Midnight.  Please sign up as soon as possible, so that each slot
is covered by several people, remembering that the middle of the period tends to be least popular.
Thank you.

especially at the principal acts of worship on Maundy Thursday at 7.30pm, Good Friday at 3.00pm
and Holy Saturday at 8.30pm.

help us to fill up the car park from the bottom so that anyone who is infirm

READERS Please collect your readings from the sacristy.  Thank you.

LENTEN THOUGHT
Today’s Gospel reminds us that people of faith can be very condemnatory
and judgemental of others.  The next couple of weeks present a real challenge to us
with regard to integrity of life; we may well find that we have no room to criticise
others at all.  Passiontide and Holy Week take us right into the heart of what we
claim to believe and place our hope in.  How will we shape up?  Will we open up a
space that allows others to criticise us on the grounds that what we say with our
lips and believe in our hearts is not shown forth in our lives?

LENTEN THOUGHT
The parable of the prodigal son is better described as the parable of the forgiving father.
It conveys to us just something of God’s forgiving love for us whenever we turn to him in true penitence.
My hope is that the Preparing for Easter leaflet will prove helpful.  The Sacrament of Reconciliation makes
this love tangible for us.

LENTEN THOUGHT
We are nearly halfway through the season of Lent, and it is
therefore a good time to ask ourselves how it is going.  Are we availing
ourselves of all that is on offer, or it the time passing us by?  God calls us
and waits with patience for our response.  Now is the time to turn outwards from
ourselves and to him in penitence and with faith in his goodness and love.
